CorePlus Credit Union Hosts Financial Reality Fair at Fitch High School
Students from several area schools participated in hands-on budgeting simulations to advance their understanding of personal finance.
NORWICH, CT — As part of its ongoing commitment to financial education, CorePlus Credit Union (CPCU) recently hosted a Financial Reality Fair at Robert E. Fitch High School in Groton. The fair took place on Monday, Nov. 4, and hosted 389 high school students as they learned about budgeting, savings, and credit through an interactive app-based experience.
While this event was the first of its kind at Fitch High School, CPCU has hosted a financial reality fair at Killingly High School each spring. Since 2009, the fair has been supported by the Credit Union League of Connecticut’s charitable foundation (Credit Unions Building Financial Independence), Connecticut’s Credit Unions, and community volunteers. It educates high school students on making wise budgeting decisions and building strong financial habits.
During the simulation, participants visit tables staffed by community volunteers and choose a career. Attendees were assigned a credit score and monthly income and tasked with choosing transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, and more while trying to remain within their budget. Students then met with financial advisors to review their spending choices and receive guidance to better understand the critical role budgeting plays in our lives every day.

With a mission statement of “Financial wellness for all,” CPCU is proud to promote financial literacy amongst our local students. The ultimate goal is to provide the tools needed to empower individuals to take control of their finances as they head into adulthood.
CPCU is grateful to Fitch High School for its hospitality as a host and for sending more than 100 students to the fair. The credit union also thanks Montville High School, Norwich Free Academy, Wheeler High School, and Woodstock Academy for participating in the fair.
