Moosup Pond | Moosup Pond Rd., Plainfield, CT
Join us in beautiful eastern Connecticut for a community-supported sprint triathlon consisting of a .5 mile swim, 12.5 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run. Moosup Pond is a lovely, small lake with clear, clean water and a wide sandy beach, great for entry and exit. The bike loop is closed to traffic and is a scenic ride through the rural countryside of Plainfield and Killingly with 4 moderate but short hills. The run course is an out-and-back route which takes you most of the way around the lake through this quaint waterfront community.
This event is open to anyone age 13 and older. Participants can compete individually or form a relay team of 2 or 3 people. Family teams are welcome and encouraged! The event will sell out at 300 participants, so registering early is recommended.
Proceeds from this event will go to Day Kimball Healthcare to benefit ongoing and future health and wellness education for communities across Northeast Connecticut.

- An additional $20 will be charged for race day registrations. Cash or personal check will only be accepted on race day.
All about the TRI
SWIM ROUTE – .5 mile
The swim route will follow a clockwise direction.
BIKE ROUTE – 12.5 miles
- Start at Moosup Pond Road, heading west up hill. Continue straight through first two stop signs.
- Turn right on Green Hollow Road at stop sign at bottom of hill.
- Continue on Green Hollow Road into Killingly. Cross over highway
- And turn around in driveway of DKH Danielson Medical Center.
- Return on Green Hollow into Plainfield.
- Pass Quikcrete factory and turn right on All Hallows Road. Continue
- On this road over a diagonal Railroad crossing, passing Depot road on the left to the intersection of Moosup Pond Road. You will be facing a large factory building [Staples].
- Turn left on Moosup Pond Road crossing Railroad tracks again and proceed up hill, down hill and through intersection with Green Hollow Road. Proceed through two stop signs back to Pond.Go straight on Moosup Pond Road down hill to pond ignoring the DO NOT ENTER sign to the finish line.
RUN/WALK ROUTE 3.1 miles
- Start at Moosup Pond Road with Pond on your left. Head east to Salmon Drive.
- Turn left on Salmon Drive continuing to end where it connects by footpath up and down a small hill to Pond Hill Road.
- Turn left on Pond Hill Road proceeding around the pond to the dead end where there will be a water station.
- Reverse direction and return on Pond Hill Road all the way past the footpath to the end where it intersects with Snake Meadow Road.
- Reverse direction again and proceed to the footpath on your left to again connect with Salmon Drive.
- Follow Salmon drive to turn right on Moosup Pond Road to finish line on grass across from the pond.
IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION
- Mortimer Road is CLOSED to through traffic during the event.
- Parking is available along Moosup Pond Road from Squaw Rock Road with signs posted.
- West side of pond (for Smith Road Parking) via Moosup Pond Rd (before it turns to one-way street) accessible from Green Hollow Rd or Squaw Rock Rd.
- There is a smaller parking area on the Salmen Drive side of the pond, signs will be posted and volunteers will be directing cars. Approach east side of pond via Lake Street or from Snake Meadow Road.
- The transition area and race packet pick-up opens at 6:00 AM, arriving early is recommended to avoid last minute rushing.
RACE DAY REGISTRATION
Race day registration will be offered starting at 6:00AM at the race site. Although we highly recommend you register early!
PACKET PICK UP
Packet pick up will be offered from 6:00AM-7:45AM on race day. Packets can be picked up at check-in tent at the race site.
Per USA Triathlon rules, all athletes must have their body marked with their assigned bib number and age, no exceptions. Body marking will take place next to packet pick up on race day starting at 6:00AM.
A pre-race athlete’s meeting will be held at 7:45 AM at the swim start on the beach. Transition will close at this time, so please be ready!
RACE DAY SCHEDULE

6:00AM-7:45AM — Registration, Packet Pick Up & Body Marking
7:45AM –Transition Area Closes, Pre-Race meeting at swim start
8AM — Race Start, First Wave
RACE DIVISIONS AND AWARDS
We will use USA Triathlon age group divisions in five year increments for this event, for example: 30 to 34 years, 35 to 39 years, etc. Your age group is determined by your age as of December 31, 2021. There is a Clydesdale category for men who weigh 220 pounds and an Athena category for women who weigh 165 pounds. There are also relay categories for two and three person teams.
Awards are given to the top three finishers in each age group, the top three finishers in the Clydesdale and Athena divisions, and to all three members of the top male relay team, top female relay team, and top mixed relay team. A random award or two may be given out at the race director’s discretion.
USA TRIATHLON INFORMATION
This is a USA Triathlon Sanctioned Event. All athletes either must present a valid USA Triathlon annual membership card at registration or purchase a single day USA Triathlon license, NO EXCEPTIONS. Single day licenses may be purchased for $15 during the registration process. If you are planning to do at least three USA Triathlon sanctioned events in a one year period, you might want to purchase an annual membership from USA Triathlon for $50. Some of the most commonly violated USA Triathlon rules are included below:
Transition Area: All athletes must use caution when entering and exiting the transition area to avoid injury to other athletes, volunteers and race staff. No glass containers are allowed in the transition area, and all equipment must be returned to your assigned rack space.
Drafting: There is no drafting on the bike course. Please consult USA Triathlon rules and regulations for more information on drafting.
Course-Cutting: All competitors are required to follow the prescribed course and to stay within all coned lanes. Cutting the course is a serious violation and going outside the course lanes is a safety issue. The punishment for course-cutting may include but is not limited to disqualification and/or the recall of awards from the event in question.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Foul, harsh, argumentative or abusive language or other unsportsmanlike conduct directed at race officials, USA Triathlon officials, volunteers, spectators or fellow athletes is forbidden. Punishment for unsportsmanlike-like conduct may include but is not limited to disqualification and/or recall of awards from the event in question.
Headphones: Headphones, headsets or any and all other personal audio devices are not to be carried or worn at any time during the race.
Race numbers: All athletes are required to wear race numbers at all times during the run. Numbers must face the front and be clearly visible at all times. Numbers may not be cut or folded or altered in any way. DO NOT transfer your number to any other athlete or take a number from an athlete that is not competing. Knowingly swapping race numbers with another athlete is a serious offense and can be punishable by suspension from all USA Triathlon sanctioned events for up to one year and/or suspension/expulsion from USA Triathlon membership.
Wetsuits: Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wetsuit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wetsuit at their own discretion, however participants who wear a wetsuit within such temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Above 84 degrees, wetsuits are prohibited.

We follow the industry standard no refunds policy. Out of fairness for all racers, Gallivant Racing is unable to offer refunds for any of our events for any reason, including but not limited to cancellation/postponement, injury, family/business emergency, medical emergency, or unexpected travel. That being said, we’re human, and you are too. If you find yourself experiencing extreme circumstances (i.e. unscheduled military service, debilitating and extenuating injury or illness, death of an immediate family member), we want to work with you on a solution through a registration transfer or deferral.
Cancelled Events due to Weather:
Gallivant Racing’s weather policy begins with the safety of our participants. All our events take place outdoors, and therefore at inherent risk of being impacted by weather. Decisions to delay, postpone, or cancel an event are made with careful consideration and in the best interest of our participants — and are final.
- We will always make every effort to start an event on the scheduled date and time.
- If the start time needs to be delayed due to weather, we will make every effort to make this decision as soon as possible and keep any delays as brief as possible.
- If weather forces the postponement of a race date, we will make every effort to make and communicate this decision as soon as possible.
INFORMATION REGARDING A SAFE RETURN TO RACING
We will be following guidance from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and will stay in line with local health guidance from the State of Connecticut. Since the guidance is constantly changing, we will update our website and send out an email to all participants and volunteers with updated protocols prior to race day.
