Killingly High School Career Center Shadow Day at WBA
Woodstock, CT, March 22, 2025…. This spring, eight Killingly High School juniors and seniors visited the offices of Woodstock Building Associates to learn about the career path of architecture. Students spent several hours with WBA Architect Steven Keene and Head of Design and Estimating, Sarah Blake, who have over 22 years combined experience in residential design-build construction at this award-winning local business.
“As the Job Shadow Coordinator at Killingly High School Career Center, my role is to find ways that allow students to explore various career sectors,” says Tania Hebert. “We offer 30 pathways. Our architectural pathway students recently had the valuable opportunity to gain firsthand insight at WBA.”
Steve and Sarah led icebreaker activities to get to know students and their specific interests in architecture. Students completed a drawing activity, sketching their ideal homes and discussing styles and preferences. Then Steve and Sarah covered educational requirements of the profession followed by an overview of what happens during a complete design and build project. Finally, students toured the facility, meeting other WBA team members, seeing sample products in the design showroom and “raw materials” behind the scenes. According to Tania, “Students were impressed that WBA does it all from start to finish and with how much work goes into each project. They also noted the staff’s dedication to client satisfaction.”
The Killingly High School Career Center provides meaningful career exploration opportunities for students, including field trips such as this. “Allowing students to engage directly with professionals in their chosen career pathways helps them make informed decisions about their futures,” says Tania. “We are grateful to Woodstock Building Associates for their support in making this experience possible.”
“Sarah and I had a great time explaining what we do at WBA,” says Steve. “The KHS students were engaged, interested, and asked lots of questions. The WBA team is committed to the next generation and these students are our future. We welcome them back any time.”
